Soft-drink industry lobbyists, led by big manufacturers like Coca-Cola, have begun an extensive campaign to rally public opinion against the proposed ban on sugary beverages larger than 16 ounces in New York City, the New York Times reported July 1.
Taking to Facebook, Twitter, and the streets, at well as radio advertisements, the industry-led New Yorkers for Beverage Choices is framing Mayor Bloomberg’s initiative as an attack on individual freedom of choice. The lobbying group has also met with City Council members and mayoral candidates to gain their support in opposing the ban.
The proposal is already undergoing review from the city’s Board of Health, which will vote on the ban in mid-September. “There’s an impartial group of health experts who are going to make the decision,” says deputy mayor Howard Wolfson. “I think they will be influenced by science, and not any P.R. campaign.”
